Bilingualism in Young Children: A Pathfinder for Sources

This pathfinder is designed to direct early childhood education professionals to those resources they need in working with young children and their families who speak languages other than English in their homes. It includes resources centered on typically developing children ages birth through eight who fall into two main groups: the child who speaks a home language other than English and English fluently (the bilingual child), and the child who speaks a home language other than English but does not know English well (the English language learner). Information is provided on: (1) library resources and subject headings and keywords to use to search the library catalog; (2) indexes and abstracting services and subject headings and keywords; (3) search engines; (4) titles and summaries of 18 books and 10 journal articles addressing bilingualism and second language learning; (5) titles and summaries of 3 relevant dissertations; (6) government documents and resources; and (7) online resources.
