How to Choose a Public School: A Guide for Parents of Young NYC School Children

This booklet guides parents though the basic steps in choosing a New York City pubic school for their child. Steps include: (1) find out what district you live in; (2) find out which school within your district your child is entitled to attend; (3) find out about other schools or programs in your district that may be appropriate for your child; and (4) apply to schools in other districts if you decide to send your child to a school in a different district. Programs and services for children with special needs are then described, including children with educational disabilities, children who need bilingual instruction, and gifted children. The booklet urges parents to be involved in their child's education by attending parent/teacher conferences, joining the parent association or parent/teacher association, helping with homework, and communicating with teachers and other school personnel. A list of telephone numbers for New York City school districts and advocacy organizations is included.
