Cultural Competence in Serving Children and Adolescents with Mental Health Problems

Based on the monograph "Towards a Culturally Competent System of Care (Terry L Cross and others), this fact sheet discusses the importance of cultural competence in servicing children and adolescents with mental health problems from different cultural backgrounds. It outlines the goals and principles of cultural competence, and lists standards of culturally competent programs at the policymaking level, administrative level, and service level. To become culturally competent, programs are urged to: (1) assess their current level of cultural competence; (2) develop support for change throughout the organization and community; (3) identify the leadership and resources needed to change; (4) devise a comprehensive cultural competence plan with specific action steps and deadlines for achievement; and (5) commit to an ongoing evaluation of progress and a willingness to respond to change.
