It addresses the following topics: (a) finding out your child had mental retardation, (b) characteristics of mental retardation, (c) reaching out for support, (d) coping with stress, (e) brothers and sisters, (f) obtaining services for your child, (g) good quality family supports, (h) using a family support quality checklist, (i) the Americans with Disabilities Act and child care, (j) early intervention services, (k) your child's education, (l) preparing for life after school, (m) ten tips to helping your child become independent, (n) being an advocate, (o) planning for the future, (p) Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, and (q) benefits for children with disabilities. The booklet closes with a list of publications relating to each topic addressed, and a list of organizations that provide family information on disability.
